I
Walked Away
(c)2008 Brian Madison
I watch the world from my overpass
I see the daily death race as
The cars flash by
I watch the sun light the frosty grass
It’s beautiful but it will not last
And it makes me cry
My shopping cart offers no reply
And I don’t mind the loneliness
This old guitar is what I’ll caress
And what I command
I’ve lost my voice but I must confess
I’m a human being with an asterisk
On the witness stand
The incredible shrinking man
Remember when what could have been
Was still our plans; slipped through our hands
Forget my name; I’ll take the blame
What can I say; I walked away
I’m just a living suicide
Passing by unidentified
In the bitter cold
Considered drowned by the rising tide
A stand-in for every dream that died
Or was oversold
But at least now I won’t get old
You’ve tracked me down, but I don’t concede
I wish you hadn’t and I won’t heed
Your court decree
So I won’t follow and you won’t lead
Why can’t you see that my sparrows need
Me desperately
Why are you all surrounding me?
Remember when what could have been
Was still our plans; slipped through our hands
Forget my name; I’ll take the blame
What can I say; I walked away
Remember when what could have been
Was still our plans; slipped through our hands
Forget my name; I’ll take the blame
What can I say; I walked away
