When I Listen to the Jam
(c) 2003 Brian Madison

When I listen to The Jam
Yeah, it always takes me back
To when I first went on my own
And I was plotting my attack
On the world without a clue
The music made us instant friends
Never thought that someday you'd be
Busy justifying ends
When I listen to The Jam

Soon we were playing in a band
And roadtripping in our cars
Working day jobs for the money
Gigging nights in shitty bars
But it couldn't last forever
So we swore we'd keep in touch
And we took different directions
Looks like you didn't miss me much

We've less in common than I thought
What did I learn, what have I bought
Was it something that I said
I play old scenes back in my head
You could have had a friend for life
I think that would have been alright
But why you dropped me I will never know

And I would call from time to time
I guess those messages got missed
And so I sent a Christmas card
I guess I never made your list
I heard you're doing very well
But I got it second hand
Now you've got your big career
Things went exactly as you planned

No longer thick as thieves no
Not as thick as we used to be no
Some bonds severed; others made
We each have gone our separate ways
There's no bridge left for me to burn
And I'm not bitter, yes I am
But I'll get over it some other day

Then when I listen to the Jam
It will always take me back
To a distant old acquaintance
To a memory fading black
When I listen to The Jam
When I listen to The Jam
When I listen to The Jam
When I listen to The Jam
Whem I listen to the Jam

Reality's so hard
Reality's so hard
Reality's so hard
Reality's so hard
